This Is Tubagility
This is Tubagility is the inspiring new album from Nick Etheridge featuring some of the UK’s finest musicians and young composers combined in a striking CD package designed by London artist Helen Ashton. This album showcases an extraordinary collection of works that are both challenging and fun from Funk, Big Band Jazz to Prog Rock, all served up with virtuosity, exuberance and seriously fat baselines….
Nick studied at Trinity College of Music London with George Wall (Royal Opera House Covent Garden) where he won several solo prizes, concerto performances, eventually winning the position of Principal Tuba with the Athens State Orchestra, Greece.
After several years in Greece Nick returned to London for further study becoming a
Fellow of Trinity College in 1996, before exploring the world with both orchestral and
chamber ensembles In the course of his travels he has worked with orchestras in Beijing,
Shanghai, Singapore, South Africa, Istanbul, and the Philharmonia der Nationen, based in
Germany with whom he has performed over one thousand concerts in 30 countries.
Nick is now based with the National Orchestra of Trinidad & Tobago. As well as professional demands. Nick has been a committed member of the famous Desford Colliery Brass Band and has led the tuba section as principlalE flat bass for
nine years, in concerts, contests and tours abroad, enjoying both the playing and
educational programme of the band, as well performing as soloist.
He is active commissioning works and arrangements for new instrumental ensembles with tuba. A tuba solo has often been perceived as one of two extremes, from plodding banality to a meaningless technical exhibition. Tubagility with the emphasis on strong musical substance and instrumental diversity hopes to redress this balance, and appeal to a new and broader audience.
