Music for Trumpet and Organ from Norwich Cathedral

The magnificence of a cathedral organ, combined with the brilliance of the trumpet, stimulates the imagination of all music lovers. Australian trumpeter, John Coulton, along with English organist David Dunnett, give superb performances of this recital repertoire. The range of the program offered here gives an insight into the versatility of this musical combination: joyful and glorious music from the Baroque, beautiful and soulful melodies found in Faure and Gounod, and powerful forces of transparent colour found in the work by Petr Eben.

John Coulton studied in Australia at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, graduating in 1998 with a Bachelor of Music Degree. His teachers included Yoram Levy, Daniel Mendelow and Graham Ashton. Since moving to England in 2001, John has studied in Europe with Anthony Plog, Pierre Dutot, Reinhold Friedrich, Mark David and Hannes Laeubin. He has performed internationally with the Malaysian Philharmonic, the Queensland Orchestra, the London Gala Orchestra, the Australian Opera Company, the Carl Rosa Opera Company, the Festival Ensemble Orchestra Stuttgart, the Australian Ballet Company, Singapore Symphony and the Philharmonia. John’s trumpet playing has also featured on numerous recordings made for Radio and Television, including music for the Sydney Olympics in 2000. His new Compact Disc release “Sounds of Splendour” features music for Trumpet and Organ from Norwich Cathedral and is receiving critical acclaim. John is currently Principal trumpet with the Britten–Pears Orchestra, as well as an active soloist and freelance musician throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
David Dunnett studied at Cambridge University and the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying the organ with David Sanger. After work in America, he returned to England to teach music and was Sub-Organist at Winchester Cathedral 1991-1996. He became organist at Norwich Cathedral in 1996. He has played the organ in many countries in Europe, Scandinavia, Brazil, USA and Australia. He features on numerous recordings as a soloist and accompanist. This year he will also give organ recitals in the Czech Republic, Russia, the Netherlands and Germany. He conducts the cathedral choir at Norwich Cathedral and regularly works as harpsichordist and pianist working in both classical and jazz styles. He teaches at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and is an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and the Royal College of Organists. He is married with two young sons and his interests include sport and aircraft.
